2021.10.17 20:30 Zack_WithaK Is a pizza delivery an appropriate time to start preaching about the miracles that Jesus Christ has performed recently?

I ordered a pizza a little while ago and as soon as I gave the delivery guy the money, he noticed a Clover mask I have sitting on my couch. He asked if it was some sort of spiritual kinda thing (I guess if you don't recognize it and see it at an angle, it can kinda look like that? I dunno) When I said no he said "Oh, well if you're interested in that, then how about the miracles that have been performed in recent history by Jesus Christ..." and he just starts going on and on about the Mayans or some shit, I guess to try to masquerade the religious stuff as spiritual stuff. I tried to be polite about it and "listen" to him but I still couldn't imagine the balls on some of these people. To just start talking about religion like I'm about to be converted cuz the guy holding a pepperoni calzone made some good points? And I can only imagine the outrage and feeling of personal attack if I started randomly talking about how god isn't real and all those books were written by people that thought the sun had emotions, I'd be perceived as the asshole like I should be.
God or not, it's a dick move to start bringing up your beliefs unprovoked like that, even after I said I wasn't religious at all. Ultimately it means nothing and the harm caused to me didn't amount to anything more than my feet hurting a little more and me getting annoyed but it's the principal of the thing that irks me. The religious are allowed to deny our very existence and talk so much shit about us that it's a single exclamation point away from being full-on hate speech, but if I just simply say I don't believe in god, I'm the asshole that's trying to bring everybody down and corrupt the innocent with my wicked, godless ways. Imagine if I started printing up "God isn't real" fliers and passed them around on the bus or just start preaching to people who are only looking to order dinner.
Next time something like this happens, I'm just gonna tell them I follow the Will of the Emperor who will one day leave his Golden Throne to unite humanity so we can finally be an interplanetary species and purge any xenos who stand in our way

2021.10.17 20:30 dariushy Are these essays too cliche?

I'm working on my UC Personal Insight Questions and
One of my essays is about my identity as a gay dude who did club swim for the past 4 years and my experience being resented by my teammates, leaving the team, until I learned to accept my sexuality and used it to go back to what I love most (swimming) with a different mindset
The other I want to write about my trip to South Africa as I was there for a month, but I do not want to give off the "savior complex" as it is far from what I intend on sounding like, but I want to highlight the issues that I experienced first hand
(The majority of my extracurriculars regard to human rights & grassroots organizations, etc)
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to successfully write these essays without sounding like the other billion people that write about such things? Should I scrap it and come up with something else entirely?
Thanks! :)

2021.10.17 20:30 Flashhahhh What is your favourite aspect of the seven deadly sins that you love

For me personally it’s that while they can often be derpy like most anime characters however they have never in the whole time we see them even in flashbacks they are never dumb they are smart and they show it. And I love that cause you expect someone in the group to be an idiot but it’s refreshing to not see that.

2021.10.17 20:30 PurpleFlame8 You're not "socking it" to anyone or changing anything by quitting your low paying job.

I keep seeing these post about people quitting their jobs and that the labor shortage is actually a shortage of companies willing to pay living wages, and be that as it may, however this is unlikely to spur increased wages and better working conditions in those industries because the effort lacks the organized clout and simultaneous mass effort that unions of the 20th century had in their push for those things.
What is likely to happen is, a few smaller businesses might lose money or go under but others will tough it out and quickly fill the vacancies when covid unemployment and stimulus money runs out and eviction moratoriums expire. Alternatively, some companies with a reduced work force will see their profits increase as they find ways to manage and keep profits up with the reduced staff. Where my friend works, they have just shifted the increased workload to him. He can't fulfill it and so customer service has gone downhill but management doesn't care because people have come to accept shitty customer service and continue to shop there.
Other companies will take the opportunity to implement technology to replace workers. A few of the supermarkets here have ripped out half of their check stands and replaced them with self checkout and many fast food places will probably adopt automated systems as are common in parts of Europe.
Inevitably many of those who quit theie jobs will eventually see their funds run out and will either have to return to their old job or a similarly shitty job if it still exists and is not taken or will be screwed.

2021.10.17 20:30 Last_Nights_Memories 29[M4R] A Sunday Distraction or Maybe More

I want to keep each other engaged, tell me about your likes, dislikes through the flow of conversation. Let's have an easygoing conversation and maybe give one another recommendations on things to watch, play, listen to. I love knowing about what's out there, and what someone else enjoys. It's much more interesting to have a conversation when someone is excited about the topic. Tell me your favorite story, or why you prefer boneless wings to bone-in (you're wrong, but it's cool). I want to know the neat little things that made you smile that day.
I'm nerdy, but you don't have to be. I find enjoyment in conversation and getting to know a person. I like when someone can be sarcastic, witty, comedic, positive, enthusiastic, and maybe a bit creative. It would be cool to find someone that feels that a single word response is not enough, but I don't mind an occasional awkward silence.
Today I'm smiling because I was chatting with my dad for a bit over a few beers and it was quite enjoyable. I recently resubbed to FFXIV on the Primal DC and not looking to switch. I'm an open book, and pretty laid back. I don't mind answering the boring questions, my favorite color is blue, or maybe grey? Maybe a nice in between. My favorite food is a toss up, but honestly you can't go wrong with pizza unless they're sick in the head and put toppings that clearly don't need to go together. I listen to all kinds of music and I suck at singing, but I still try and pop off when I'm really feeling it. I play games on my PlayStation and PC, and I don't mind playing something together, just know I suck at shooters. Honestly I'm pretty terrible at most things but if I get enjoyment what does it matter?
Anyway, hi :)

2021.10.17 20:30 Suspicious-Feeling-1 Did Poorly on a Technical Assessment, Pretty Surprised

I was hoping to get some perspective from hiring managers out there, or anyone who does this stuff for a living. I had an assessment not go my way for an analytics position at an F500 fairly recently. I was pretty surprised to hear the SQL assessment was the reason I didn't get the position - felt pretty good about that part of the job req's. I'm one of the top people in my department for SQL, and I'm usually pretty good at technical tests.
This test was 4 questions long, basically here are the available tables, here's the result set we want you to transform them into, go. I was told speed was the most important metric they were judging off of - ie. how fast you could arrive at solutions, not query performance. Aside from being told it needed to be done under an hour, I wasn't given further detail on how they were assessing the answers.
I did the exercises, I QA'd my work to make sure it did what it was supposed to (I think this was my mistake), and I handed in the answers, confident I got everything, in 39 minutes. I was called a few days later and told I didn't make the cut - I wasn't fast enough.
Suffice it to say, I'm pretty frustrated. I thought my background and experience were a really good match for the role, they recruited me, and I'd never felt as qualified for a position I've applied to before. It seems really odd that speed to solution was so emphasized - I could have been done in 5 seconds and handed in a blank sheet of paper, or been a smartass and just hard-coded a bunch of select statements unioned together with the desired result sets and been done in 5 minutes. It just wasn't clear to me where the balance was between how good of a solution it was and how fast the solution was - and it would have been really helpful if they had done something like '<20 minutes = excellent, <30minutes = good', etc, just so I could have known what I should be shooting for, rather than 'faster than an hour'.
My question on this (and I appreciate anyone who made it through the vent) is the following - does this seem like a reasonable way to judge ability / skill? I know we have to work in uncertain environments and sometimes getting things done quickly is important, so I somewhat understand there might be the mind-set of "They emphasized speed was important, you should have just belted it out ASAP" - but at the same time, does the ability to write a fairly straightforward query in 5 minutes rather than 10 minutes really tell you much about someone's ability? And maybe one step further, why not just set the expectation up front for what good performance looks like? Clearly I have sour grapes, but wanted to see if that's all it is or if this did seem kind of odd.
